Praying
I kneel where the moss is thin
and pray softly
like a girl underwater
words drifting up in slow motion
and escaping
I say your name
like a confession
then hold my breath
and wait
like the animals
I learn their quiet
how deer forgive the dark
I hope
for a blessing
are you a miracle
are you a mistake
I say your name
the way angels do
votive candles flickering
wax tears harden on my face
cannot be wiped away

“are you a miracle
are you a mistake”
